My Facebook account disabled! Why ? [kwiqq]

Posted on | January 11, 2008 | 21 Comments

Right so I started a new community for people who enjoy Salsa dancing in Brighton, Anderstand.com. Now I wanted to tell all my Facebook friends about it, but obviously Facebook doesn’t allow me to send emails to all my friends. So I decided to email my real friends and user’s on my friend AaronGeorge’s Salsa Dance group.

I started sending emails one after the other (remember personally addressed to each user) and guess what Facebook banned my freakin’ account! Was it really spamming ? NOPE

Here are some facts about the people I sent the emails to:

  1. They were all interested in Salsa
  2. They are based in Brighton
  3. I didn’t use any desktop application to generate these emails.
  4. The email were addressed to each recipient.

This wouldn’t have happened on Bebo or Myspace. How else am I suppose to contact Brightonians who I know are interested in Salsa ?

I have spent god knows how many hours building my profile on Facebook. Inviting friends, building facebook applications and adding value to Facebook. Recommending this rather stupid social network to my clients and friends. The least I want to do is use the facilities to contact users on my network and tell them about things they are genuinely interested in.

My question to facebook is:

  1. Why can’t I contact people in my network ?
  2. Why don’t you let me contact people I know, should I be using my Gmail account instead of Facebook to contact them ?
  3. When will you guys at Facebook stop being Jerks ?

This is pathetic ! Now I’m almost tempted to start a new social network for people who have been banned from Facebook. I know there is Robert Scoble who would potentially join me.

    Hi Raj,

Sorry to hear about your troubles with Facebook. I’ve written a post about social media backlashes here, if you’re interested and would like to comment or post a link to your post.

I’ve lost track of the number of times that Facebook has reacted disproportionately to some action deemed offensive to their site.

Given Scoble’s hassles recently, maybe they’ve just got it in for bloggers in general? I’d better watch my back in case I’m next for being supportive! ;)

A business partner and I recently launched a British social networking site, which we would be honoured to have you join in you’re feeling adventurous! Any input on what we’re doing would be warmly received too.

I give Facebook 48 hours to reinstate your account though. ;)

there’s massive disquiet about Facebook from grown-ups anyway.

I’m a 40 year old lawyer who is fed up of having people throw sheep and goodness knows what else at me alongside ‘hottness’ requests and inane trite stuff posted on ‘funwalls’ – themself an oxymoron. This alongside the massive privacy issues ultimately means it will be a matter of time before the boredom and rot sets in.

Join me and others on http://www.twitter.com It’s much more accessible and there’s no zombie biting or sheep in sight. Add me – I’m online as paulnicholls hope to see you in there

I wish Facebook would disable my account, it would save me the bother…

I had this happen to me and contacted a representative and told her to look at my profile, obviously I was not a spammer. She re-enabled it and told me, like you, that that was my one free strike.

It’d be nice if a warning popped up after the fifth message or something.

We had spent a lot of time building our fan page, and friend list. We even spent
$$$ advertising with FB. They out of the blue, deleted us:
Their reason “too many friends with similar characteristics” It’s kind of absurd when you think about it.
We made a short funny video about it

    Dear Sir,

I was not active in facebook for a while and many of my friends had been recently joined facebook so I had added them as I have known them for quite a while. My intention was sincerely not to harass someone neither to break the rules of facebook.I respect facebook rules and regulations. It was just a honest mistake and I didnt mean to annoy or harass someone.

I assure you that I wont repeat this again and I would not send friend requests .Please activate my facebook account back as my close friends and relatives are there on facebook and I would love to be in contact with them.

I am extremely sorry if I have caused any trouble to someone. Please I beg for my facebook account.I am so sorry and apologize for my mistake which was not intentional.

    Thank you once again.

The same thing has happened to me. I had only 4 messages in my inbox, to which I responded on Friday, and my profile was pulled. I have tried to contact them directly but they won’t respond. I am desperate and distraught. I don’t have anything bad on my profile, nothing inappropriate at all. I have begged and pleaded in emails to them but they go unanswered. I don’t know what to do.

This is what they do when you add Mafia Wars friends….

    Hi Edward,

Facebook accounts are meant for personal, authentic usage only and
should reflect mainly your “real-world contacts.” As such, fake
accounts are a violation of our Statement of Rights and
Responsibilities. This includes accounts that exist solely for the
usage of third-party gaming applications, as well as users that
maintain multiple accounts to gain an unfair advantage in these
    applications.

While we realize that certain third-party applications might
encourage users to create multiple accounts, send out form messages,
or make posts on other users’ Walls, we cannot make exceptions to the
    policies we have in place.

Please be aware that we take the appropriate action on any violations
we encounter. If there are any accounts like this on the site
currently, it is only because they have not yet been removed.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to reactivate this account for any
    reason. This decision is final.

    Thanks for your understanding,
