Hi Raj – A nice way to encourage Twitter use is adding a field to your comment form, so commenters can leave their Twitter ID as well! WordPress has a plugin…

I found that students tweeted regularly about the library — actually more about homework and assignments in general, which often brought them into the library. This was a serendipitous discovery because I had not anticipated using Twitter as an assessment tool, but it enabled me to monitor actual usage of library services. Some of the comments were positive, such as “I love the huge monitors in the library” or “I found the prefect book for my paper.” However, many statements were more critical, including “The library is always unbearably hot,” “Why do librarians make it impossible to find books, job security?” or “The library is packed, I can’t get any work done with all this noise.” While some students expressed opinions, I found the majority of those who mentioned the library did so as more matter-of-fact: “printing class notes in the library,” “drinking Cappuccino in the library,” or “meeting group in the library to work on calc problem set.”
Twitter also serves as a chronicle for extended library visits. One student entered the library at 4 p.m. and didn’t leave until 10 the next morning; every few hours, he used Twitter to update readers on the progress of his assignment. Another student described several final-exam study sessions that took place over the course of a week. She described her journey around campus and reviewed various places including department computer labs, lounges, breakout spaces, dorms, and the library.
Students use Twitter to share their life stories with anyone who chooses to follow them. We can learn a lot from this openness by seeing not only how they use the library but their perceptions and expectations as well. Twitter is also the ultimate gauge of word of mouth because it enables us to see exactly what students are telling their friends about the library.
