Enterprise 2.0 the next big thing. Are you ready? [kwiqq]

Enterprise 2.0 is a fancy word for, social software being used in enterprise (i.e. business) context. It includes social and networked modifications to corporate intranets and other classic software platforms used by large companies to organize their communication.

A recent article in ZDNet owned by CBS Interactive mentioned that between a third and half of businesses either already are or will be deploying so-called Enterprise 2.0 tools in the workplace (blogs, wikis, and social networking/messaging) in 2009. This compliments Deloittes’s report on Social networking and reputation risk in the workplace (2009):

Executives: how Connected are you?

Executives: how Connected are you?

55% percent of executives say their companies don’t have an official use of network, and 22% said their companies would like to use social networking tools, but haven’t yet figured out how.

Some other facts which ZDNet pointed out in their article:

  • One in two businesses will use Enterprise 2.0 software in 2009: According to Forresters report the number of businesses  looking to get into Enterprise 2.0 is 50%. Although only time will tell if all employees get access to these.
  • 50% of businesses will use Wiki or work collaboration tools: Work collaboration and project management tools is putting social web to a fantastic use. I wrote earlier about 7 reasons for using online project management tools I genuinely think it is useful for any business looking to increase their efficiency.
  • Fear of using these tools: We will be naive if we didn’t address the fears businesses have in using these tools. Management of content types like blogs, wikis are largely off the corporate radar for 75% of organisations. Further 80% of businesses are concerned about security issues around social computing

On a positive note more and more companies are looking carefully at Enterprise 2.0 and know its something which they can’t avoid. Executives are spending more time to embrace the technology whilst trying to mitigate risks, says Deloittes report. I found this question on their survey fascinating:

“Executive team regularly discuss how we can best leverage social networks to our advantage while mitigating risks:”

This number of 27%  of business executives regularly discussing how to best leverage social networks is on the rise. It is not long before more and more businesses thinking about this regularly rises significantly.
