Business Matters is the monthly business newspaper launched in February 2007 by Sussex Newspapers. Dedicated to local Sussex businesses large and small, focusing on issues that concern you – with the opportunity to express your opinions, communicate your success – and gain new clients across the area.
Recently Business Matters’ Theo Cronin met me at Virgin Atlantics HQ to discuss Social Networking for businesses. Paul Hickenbotham recently wrote an article on Social Networking:

SUSSEX-based Raj Anand (right) also topped the bill along side Ruth Badger at the Grow Your Own event in Crawley, speaking about social networking and its impact on business.
The University of Sussex graduate, finalist of Sussex Entrepreneur 2008, and BusinessWeek’s Europe Young Entrepreneur 2007, enthused about the potential marketing opportunities new technology affords companies. “Marketing in the past has been a very costly part of the strategy to grow the business, but no more though” he told Business Matters.
“Networks like Twitter, LinkedIn , and Facebook can help you market even better if done correctly. “The aim is to use the tools efficiently to help you brand, to get out there, and sell your services or product.” The trick for companies, Raj explained, was to be fully engaged with social media.
“Your aim as a business is to be on all the different networks and update them all so that you can keep customers updated on your latest offers, and keep them familiar with your brand or business.”
Such activity also increases businesses’ Google ranking. “You should aim to get as many inbound links to your site as possible , so when you are on Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace and Twitter, every time you link to your site it is increasing your rank on Google. “So if you are on all the different websites, you will have more links and better Google ranking.”
Raj is the operations director of Sussex-based online technology company Kwiqq. He has developed a product so businesses can capitalise on his recommendations, which allows firms to add social media to their existing web domains.
