Revisiting Crunch.co.uk: End-to-end accountancy solution (for freelancers) [kwiqq]

Crunch is a new accounting solution which allows small businesses to manage their finances. We covered them four months back, now just revisiting their progress. Crunch at first might appear to be another SaaS (Software as a Service) application, where you manage your invoices, suppliers, clients etc. Although in reality it is a 24/7 accountant. Crunch can:

  • Generates invoices.
  • Does most of the work your accountant does.
  • End of year company house filing.
  • Setup limited company.

The last two services requires you to pay a one-off fee, all the others services are available @ £59.50. Why pay £150 per month to an accountant when you can pay £60?

The video explains how Crunch works:

My favourite

For me the highlight is the ability to Generate the invoice -> Send it -> Confirm money received (by connecting Crunch to your bank account).

Accounting was one of the most unattractive aspect of running a business as a freelancer, for me. I rather focus on my business than spend 4 hours every month, going through my receipts, sending it to my accountant who then charged me a £150/month.

Good value for money

The diagram below, clearly states the return on investment for a customer:

Eagerly anticipating

Soon you will be able to pay suppliers using Crunch.co.uk, certainly cherry on the cake. Imagine, one solution to track, pay, receive, send (invoice), file and above all hassle free.

Crunch.co.uk, another British success story?

Crunch has the potential to be massive, probably becuase they understands start-ups/freelancers and can take on the big boys, perhaps because they are start-ups themselves. In Crunch.co.uk’s words:

With an Ex-HMRC accountant, a successful entrepreneur and a design-studio boss Crunch combines great user-experience with the knowledge and know how to get the job done – all at a great price.

Update: Two key features which @DarrenFell pointed out:

  • Automated return: Customers now have the option to automate standard and flat rate VAT returns to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), doubly checked before submitting.
  • Tax and accounting support: Customer can call at any time and book in a call with a highly experienced tax specialist/accountant, who can spend time (without charging on a minute by minute basis) until they are perfectly happy.

The only issue which they don’t seem to cover in any detail is IR35? If you are a contractor setting up a limited company and you can prove your assignment is outside IR35 then you are set to be much better off. Its a shame.

David, thanks for your comment. Crunch has a fair few contractors who are inside IR-35.

Crunch is a hybrid solution with a whole software system and the Accountants and Tax Specialists on the end of the phone. It’s the tax specialists who prepare the IR-35 special calculations so these contractors only take out the correct pay and dividends leaving the IR-35 monies ready for their Corporation Tax payment.
