Social Media has opened doors to several opportunities in business and our personal lives. But has also initiated a heap of unnecessary management phrases which many don’t understand. The first thing I was taught in business was to KISS (Keep in Simple Stupid).
Unfortunately these phrases have totally confused many (including my mum). Below is a list of them and what they really mean to my mum:
- Social media is all about interaction. Sites like Facebook are all about people
- Are you my Twiend? Mum, they are asking if you are their connection on an online service called Twitter
- Can you provide me some buzz matrix. Mum, don’t worry it’s not worth explaining
- How do you monetize social media. How do you make money out of online services
- Can you please RT me. Can you please rebroadcast my message on an online service called Twitter
- Can you please tweet me your digits. Can you please send me your telephone number
- Let’s Skype each other tomorrow. Let’s have a telephone conversation
- I’m a social media expert. Mum, please ignore!
- I’m all about social media and ROI. They can help your company make a profit online
- We apply social media to various verticals. They can help you use online services across an entire sector
- We are a SEO organisation, helping you increase your PageRank. They help companies become easily search-able
- Our organisation went global from day one. This organisation is based on the Internet
- You can follow us on most social media platforms. Mum, they have a profile on Facebook and other sites like Facebook
- We have built apps for Andriod and iPhone OS. Mum, they provide services on mobile phones
- We are looking at innovative Social Media. They are considering going online
- We build highly scalable viral marketing campaigns. Mum, they are a marketing company
- We provide an engagement strategy and comprehensive community management tools. They puts you in touch with your clients
- All our campaigns are measurable, goal driven and highly scalable. Mum, this doesn’t really mean much, get back to your knitting
- We get 2,000 uniques per day. Their website has many visitors
- Our proposition is unique, we are probably the first on the Internet to monetize Web 2.0. Mum, they are con artists
