I uploaded my video almost two months back, it was a silly home made video expressing how I was addicted to Twitter. Facebook today removed the video:
“We have removed your video entitled “I’m addicted to Twitter” uploaded at 1:39am October 17th, 2008. We did this because we learned that your video might include copyrighted material owned by a third party, such as a video clip or background audio.”
(Read the complete notice below)
Obviously I don’t have (exclusive) rights to use the background audio. I hold my hands up to it, although it clearly shows Facebook is now on to something . Removing homemade videos, is this the Microsoft influence or just advertisers looking for genuine User Generated Content ?
Compare that with YouTube who also actively remove videos infringing copyright, although only when they get too popular or someone actively complains about them. My video only has 137 views (absolutely tiny) and except from being silly and promoting Twitter doesn’t have much to it. Surely Twitter didn’t complain about it. So who did ? If no one complained then why remove the video and annoy users ?
I was closely examining the pictures of the terrorists on boston big picture and was surprised to notice that one of the terrorist was wearing a hindu wrist band:
Typical you would get one of these from a temple, during a festival or an important occassion. The string has several names one of which is nada chhadi. Some examples:
Is this a disguise ? I don’t want to speculate anything at this point.. I will leave for you to make up your own mind, either way this is very surprising !
Recently I spoke at Middlesex University, presentation available on Kwiqq’s Blog. An article was published in the monthly Middlesex University Magazine (Middlesex World) highlighting the importance of social networking:
[The blog was entirely written on iPhone wordpress application whilst on the train. Apologies for any inaccurate spellings / typos]
Social networking are taking over our lives in more than one way: finding out about gigs, keep in touch with friends and professional contacts.
That reminds me a few months back I contacted an investor using Facebook. Immediately got a response to “NOT connect via Facebook”
It is almost impossible to resist the temptations of emailing through fb. So why do I still email contacts through facebook ? 5 reasons:
1. A lot of speaking opportunities arise from Facebook (friends of friends getting in touch). If they email on Facebook I have to respond through the system.
2. A lot of my professional contacts are on it. It’s impossible to keep their business cards handy. Facebook hence becomes an obvious choice of communication
3. Having installed facebook application on my iPhone it’s convenient to contact users at anytime.
4. Once in a while work email can be considered as spam although due to facebook’s popularity email systems recognize it and bypass the spam filters.
5. Contacting through facebook is more social / chatty and less formal. My prefered style of communication! Further it is getting more acceptable amongst the business community
A few years back just before university I wasn’t sure of the path I should take. Not sure if I liked people to judge my ideas without really knowing the effort which has gone into it. Hence my attitude towards students is of encouragement. Unlike most of the dragons on the real Dragon’s Den. Although I must say James Cann approach seems more in line with my thoughts. Critical at times although generally professional and polite.
Apart from the idea and market size I would also want to see the passion which takes to make the idea a reality. I don’t think there is any shortage of good ideas, with a little coaching most of the students can do very well ! Although the gap between thinking and implementing is absolutely massive. I don’t even care if the idea is an absolute failure as long as they put it into practice. Statistically the chances of the first business failing are high but these are stepping stones for a successful business at a later stage.
Some ideas which came out of Shell STEP were absolutely fantastic and shows the depth of knowledge and understanding of their subject. Seriously these candidates are really smart and some very determined ! Converting that from technology to a business is the hard bit but achievable.
To summarise it is all about the implementation. Judging the feasibility of the idea, with market size and passion to succeed is what I’m really looking for !
When I started developing my business a very common question investors asked me was how do you measure the success of your business. The answer 9 out of 10 times was, revenue. It almost got to the point that subliminally I related ‘measure success’ to ‘business model‘.
Touch
Although when I think carefully revenue is not the measure of success for many organisations especially social enterprises. So I have thought of a new way to define success: ‘Success is the number of people an organisation can touch directly or indirectly.’
Touch = affected / use application / talk about
Can this be a universal measure ?
Ok let’s try and see if this works for Facebook, Oxfam, kiva.org, Kwiqq…
Facebook has over 100 million users. I think of it as a platform to reach other people. It is used by millions of users all over the world very frequently (I hear average twice a day). Hence it does pass the test, no wonder it has an excellent evaluation.
Again Oxfam is also involved in helping several individuals and organizations on a daily basis. It not only connects people raising finances but also people who receive it. Passes the test ! Kiva.org is a similar example, the more penetration it achieves the more people it would touch and the more successful it would be !
Kwiqq, early days for us but we touch millions of users indirectly via our partners and organizations we work with. The more people we can get to indirectly via our partners the more success we shall see.
Success
The idea is NOT a groundbreaking but is just another way of measuring your success !
As the organisers put it to me, could you do a ‘Fun presentation on social networking sites, and the phenomenon and ongoing future/possibilities of them’. Now I’m thinking, I’m sure I can do a presentation on Social Networking in my sleep. But to make it fun, should I make the participants dance ? Weird ??
I remember going to a Flying Start NCGE presentation in Brighton and witnessed one of the most inspiring dances from Mike Southon, Business Speaker and Financial Times Columnist. He said to do business you should be able to laugh at yourself. .
So students at Middlesex university get ready to dance as part of the social networking phenomenon I’ll bring a selection of tunes to inspire you all !
The title perhaps doesn’t do justice to the blog, never the less what I meant is ‘If your business was a person what characteristics would they have ?’ Workaholics, party animals, lazy, clever etc.
I think of my business (Kwiqq) as a person and it comprises of everyone who works for it. If my business was a person it would be someone who works hard plays hard. Kwiqq likes to be involved in things and has much more than just a pure commercial objectives. Kwiqq has a nice sense of humour, Kwiqq is friendly, welcoming and very ambitious !
The characteristic of our business is important because it helps us find the right people to join the business. It tells people the DNA of your business and what they could expect from us.
