*Shocking* Mumbai terrorist wearing a hindu wrist band

Posted by rajanand on Nov 29, 2008 in Personal, Totally Random

I was closely examining the pictures of the terrorists on boston big picture and was surprised to notice that one of the terrorist was wearing a hindu wrist band:

Mumbai Terrorist with a hindu wrist band by you.

Typical you would get one of these from a temple, during a festival or an important occassion. The string has several names one of which is nada chhadi. Some examples:

Is this a disguise ? I don’t want to speculate anything at this point.. I will leave for you to make up your own mind, either way this is very surprising !

There is a lot of talk of how Obama used several social networking tools like Twitter, Flickr, LinkedIn etc. I wanted to highlight the speed at which Obama supporters spread the news whilst McCains were struggling !

(Falmer) *NEW* Brighton Albion Stadium and City College

Posted by rajanand on Nov 10, 2008 in Brighton, Totally Random

Brighton and Hove Stadium in Falmer has been a centre of debate for several years now. Recently I came across the stadium in the Business Edge Magazine. Turns out the Stadium is linked to the Brighton and Hove City College. The stadium looks appealing:

How to measure success ? (Both Social + for profit)

Posted by Raj Anand on Oct 25, 2008 in Personal, Totally Random

[Early Stage idea]

When I started developing my business a very common question investors asked me was how do you measure the success of your business. The answer 9 out of 10 times was, revenue. It almost got to the point that subliminally I related ‘measure success’ to ‘business model‘.

Touch people

Touch

Although when I think carefully revenue is not the measure of success for many organisations especially social enterprises. So I have thought of a new way to define success: ‘Success is the number of people an organisation can touch directly or indirectly.’

Touch = affected / use application / talk about

Can this be a universal measure ?

Ok let’s try and see if this works for Facebook, Oxfam, kiva.org, Kwiqq…
Facebook has over 100 million users. I think of it as a platform to reach other people. It is used by millions of users all over the world very frequently (I hear average twice a day). Hence it does pass the test, no wonder it has an excellent evaluation.

Again Oxfam is also involved in helping several individuals and organizations on a daily basis. It not only connects people raising finances but also people who receive it.  Passes the test ! Kiva.org is a similar example, the more penetration it achieves the more people it would touch and the more successful it would be !

Kwiqq, early days for us but we touch millions of users indirectly via our partners and organizations we work with. The more people we can get to indirectly via our partners the more success we shall see.

Success

Success

The idea is NOT a groundbreaking but is just another way of measuring your success !

Who really is Raj? Lost in translation

Posted by rajanand on Oct 19, 2008 in Featured, Totally Random

At the Young Apeldoorn conference another part of me was exposed, to myself. My background ! Having spent (almost) 1/3rds of my life in Kuwait, India and then the UK. I feel I’m blessed to be able to see things from a different eye. Although often the question ‘who are you Indian, Kuwaiti or British’ comes up ?

Raj Anand

Raj Anand

As I mentioned to my group at the conference. I eat Sunday roasts and go to the pub in the evening. My circle of friends are from all over Europe. Although at the same time I speak/read/write 3 Indian languages fluently. But yes I was born and brought up in Kuwait. Hang on! so who am I. This is not really a question for people who really know me, they understand that I’m a complex mix of cultures. Although this is only uncomfortable when someone asks the question “You seem to have an accent but I can’t really place it!”. At that point I start with this long story about where I was born and why I moved and why I’m in the UK. Most of them by then had enough and want to move to the next person. Some people find it exotic and start probing me with some really interesting questions.

One of the most interesting questions are “Who would you support in a football game”. So this is my general answer. If England was to play Kuwait. I would support England, because well England has better chances of winning. If Kuwait played India then obviously Kuwait. Although if India played England in cricket I would support India, football it would be other way round ! I almost sound like a win obsessed whore, although this is truly how I feel. It is like the child who has 2 mothers, one who bought him up and the other who gave birth. Both deserve equal appreciation !

The irony of the situation is that none of the countries would really say I belong to them! For India I’m a NRI (Non Resident Indian) hence I’m a cash cow bringing in foreign currency but for that I need to stay outside India. Kuwait I’m an immigrant who does all the hard work but will never be a national ! England I’m a foreign immigrant, the general consensus is that foreigners squeeze locals out of  jobs. Although with Kwiqq I (or rather we) have probably added just under a million pounds to the British economy and several full time/part time jobs. Not counting the numerous speeches I give on young entrepreneurship to inspire people around the country, to make a difference.

I would perhaps never know who I really am. But I guess it doesn’t matter or it should not matter ! Really I’m just a technology entrepreneur trying to make a difference and I love what I do.

If your business was a person who would they be ?

Posted by rajanand on Oct 17, 2008 in Personal, Social Web, Totally Random, startup tip
Stanford Reunion 1997

The title perhaps doesn’t do justice to the blog, never the less what I meant is ‘If your business was a person what characteristics would they have ?’  Workaholics, party animals, lazy, clever etc.

I think of my business (Kwiqq) as a person and it comprises of everyone who works for it. If my business was a person it would be someone who works hard plays hard. Kwiqq likes to be involved in things and has much more than just a pure commercial objectives. Kwiqq has a nice sense of humour, Kwiqq is friendly, welcoming and very ambitious !

The characteristic of our business is important because it helps us find the right people to join the business. It tells people the DNA of your business and what they could expect from us.

Posted by rajanand on Oct 3, 2008 in Brighton, Personal, Social Web, Totally Random, startup tip
Sparta (Wi) H.S. Spartan

Many people seem devistated with the state of the economy. I’m not saying that I’m not disappointing with what has happened but I feel the need to inspire my fellow web entrepreneurs.

Hence I have decided to cancel my Christmas holidays and show entrepreneurs that it is still a great time to work on a new startup.

Details will follow shortly ! WATCH THIS SPACE.
