Facebook cracks down on homemade videos ‘Alleged Copyright Infringement’

Posted by rajanand on Dec 6, 2008 in Dance/Music, Marketing, Personal, Salsa/Reggaeton, Social Web, twitter

I uploaded my video almost two months back, it was a silly home made video expressing how I was addicted to Twitter. Facebook today removed the video:

“We have removed your video entitled “I’m addicted to Twitter” uploaded at 1:39am October 17th, 2008. We did this because we learned that your video might include copyrighted material owned by a third party, such as a video clip or background audio.”

(Read the complete notice below)

Obviously I don’t have (exclusive) rights to use the background audio. I hold my hands up to it, although it clearly shows Facebook is now on to something . Removing homemade videos, is this the Microsoft influence or just advertisers looking for genuine User Generated Content ?

Compare that with YouTube who also actively remove videos infringing copyright, although only when they get too popular or someone actively complains about them. My video only has 137 views (absolutely tiny) and except from being silly and promoting Twitter doesn’t have much to it. Surely Twitter didn’t complain about it. So who did ? If no one complained then why remove the video and annoy users ?

Hello, We have removed your video entitled "I'm addicted to Twitter" uploaded at 1:39am October 17th, 2008. We did this because we learned that your video might include copyrighted material owned by a third party, such as a video clip or background audio. If you are the copyright owner, or have permission from the rights holder to upload and distribute this material on Facebook, you may file a counter notice of alleged infringement by following the link below. Please note that if you re-upload this video without filing a counter notice, or if you upload another video that infringes on the rights of a third party, our system will again remove the content. This could cause your access to the Facebook Video application to be disabled, or your Facebook account to be disabled.

Using facebook mail to connect with contact

Posted by Raj Anand on Nov 9, 2008 in Personal, Social Web

[The blog was entirely written on iPhone wordpress application whilst on the train. Apologies for any inaccurate spellings / typos]

Social networking are taking over our lives in more than one way: finding out about gigs, keep in touch with friends and professional contacts.

That reminds me a few months back I contacted an investor using Facebook. Immediately got a response to “NOT connect via Facebook”

It is almost impossible to resist the temptations of emailing through fb. So why do I still email contacts through facebook ? 5 reasons:

1. A lot of speaking opportunities arise from Facebook (friends of friends getting in touch). If they email on Facebook I have to respond through the system.

2. A lot of my professional contacts are on it. It’s impossible to keep their business cards handy. Facebook hence becomes an obvious choice of communication

3. Having installed facebook application on my iPhone it’s convenient to contact users at anytime.

4. Once in a while work email can be considered as spam although due to facebook’s popularity email systems recognize it and bypass the spam filters.

5. Contacting through facebook is more social / chatty and less formal. My prefered style of communication! Further it is getting more acceptable amongst the business community

Should Middlesex Uni kids dance ?

Posted by rajanand on Oct 22, 2008 in Dance/Music, Europe, Events, Personal, Social Web

digital futures

So I’m doing a short talk at Middlesex University London on Digital Future.

As the organisers put it to me, could you do a ‘Fun presentation on social networking sites, and the phenomenon and ongoing future/possibilities of them’. Now I’m thinking, I’m sure I can do a presentation on Social Networking in my sleep. But to make it fun, should I make the participants dance ?  Weird ?? Networking Opportunity: meet Mike Southon

I remember going to a Flying Start NCGE presentation in Brighton and witnessed one of the most inspiring dances from Mike Southon, Business Speaker and Financial Times Columnist. He said to do business you should be able to laugh at yourself. .

So students at Middlesex university get ready to dance as part of the social networking phenomenon :) I’ll bring a selection of tunes to inspire you all !

If your business was a person who would they be ?

The title perhaps doesn’t do justice to the blog, never the less what I meant is ‘If your business was a person what characteristics would they have ?’  Workaholics, party animals, lazy, clever etc.

I think of my business (Kwiqq) as a person and it comprises of everyone who works for it. If my business was a person it would be someone who works hard plays hard. Kwiqq likes to be involved in things and has much more than just a pure commercial objectives. Kwiqq has a nice sense of humour, Kwiqq is friendly, welcoming and very ambitious !

The characteristic of our business is important because it helps us find the right people to join the business. It tells people the DNA of your business and what they could expect from us.

AroundMe iPhone App looking good

Posted by rajanand on Oct 7, 2008 in Brighton, Social Web, iPhone

Last night I downloaded the AroundMe iPhone app. It is free as oppose to Vicinity which costs £1.79. I thoroughly tested it and the results were very impressive. It spotted all the banks, hospitals, cinemas local to me. Well almost the Coffee and Bars section disappointed me a little. It didn’t spot Starbucks, Nero, Redroaster… Didn’t find Redroaster…Grr!

Let the economy not deter you !

Posted by rajanand on Oct 6, 2008 in Europe, Personal, Social Web, startup tip

Context: BreakingNewsOn Europe’s Stoxx 600 falls more than 7%, its biggest drop since 1987, Bloomberg TV reports”

Startup.

I’m now even more focused/determined to prove that a startup can be built even during difficult times. It doesn’t have to rely on massive investment capital ($25 million or above) to sustain and grow over the years.

I’ll make an announcement soon !

Protoshare: Wireframing for non-designers

Posted by rajanand on Oct 5, 2008 in Personal, Social Web, startup tip

UB example wireframe

If you are not a full time designer like myself then you might find ProtoShare an excellent tool to make those Web mockups. I think it is cool because:

  1. Fully browser based
  2. Based on drag and drop
  3. Seriously easy

In the past I have seen some wireframing tools which are desktop based and produce the most tasteless results. This one though looks good and professional. This tool is ideal for founders of startups who know what they want but can’t design to save their lives.

I’m loving everybit of it. Designed two pages already and they look almost as good as bespoke wireframes built by a designer.

Sparta (Wi) H.S. Spartan

Many people seem devistated with the state of the economy. I’m not saying that I’m not disappointing with what has happened but I feel the need to inspire my fellow web entrepreneurs.

Hence I have decided to cancel my Christmas holidays and show entrepreneurs that it is still a great time to work on a new startup.

Details will follow shortly ! WATCH THIS SPACE.

Hack: Stream BBC content on realplayer (bypass iPlayer)

Posted by rajanand on Sep 30, 2008 in Dance/Music, Europe, Personal, Social Web, Totally Random
RealPlayer

Image via Wikipedia

If you dislike playing BBC programs on iPlayer here is a way to play it straight from your real player. Now you can rewind, forward, etc all the content on your r player. It needs a little bit of guessing but it works like charms:

Step 1: Start Realplayer > Open Location

Step 2: Enter: rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio_station_name/program_name.ra

Examples:

So say you want to hear Tim Westwood (Radio 1) the URL is rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio1/westwood.ra

Alan Titchmarsh (Radio 2): rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio2/r2_titchmarsh.ra

Panjabi Hit Squad (1xtra): rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/1xtra/panjabi.ra

How to guess the program_name ?

Its easy!  go to BBC’s website and the program you want to hear and check their HEAR THE SHOW or LISTEN AGAIN’s  URL. For instance Alan Titchmarsh’s HEAR THE SHOW URL is:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio2_aod.shtml?radio2/r2_titchmarsh

hence the Real player URL is: rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio2/r2_titchmarsh.ra
